Capital Area Paranormal Society

Cheney Mansion is certainly an incredible site! The original smaller red structure was built in 1827. The 1860’s saw an extensive expansion of this now exquisite white building. Besides being a residential home, it was utilized for many different enterprises. It is believed to be a part of the underground railroad. There was a doctor’s office and a bank that still houses an amazing old vault. On the grounds of this stunning location there is a storage building, a museum, a one room schoolhouse and a church along with log cabins. In essence, a small village included in the investigation package. Many reports of paranormal activity have been noted inside the mansion. Quite frankly, I wouldn’t blame any former occupants for wanting to stay in this breathtaking place!

Jim and I pulled up to the back of the building where we were met by Dan and Jason. It wasn’t very long before they both saw something peeking out of the uppermost attic window. I was too enthralled looking around my surroundings that I had missed it.

We were warmly greeted by our hostess for the night, Julia. She gave us a thorough tour of the building. A little while later we met with our other hostess, Vicki. I was exceedingly happy to meet another Vicki, with an i!

Jim put up our video cameras in several areas. The building also has their own system set up, so it was very well covered! We had several K2 hits throughout the evening in various parts of the mansion. The highest rates I had were in the downstairs music room. When scanning the chairs, the meter would light up some of them about halfway on the seat. I seem to recall that proper ladies in their gowns did not sit all the way to the back of a chair…

Jim played around on the piano and afterwards the Ovilus said “magic tone”. We were left wondering, did the spirit truly enjoy his playing or was it sarcasm?

While I was in the front parlor with Jason and Dan, the cabinet next to me was making some strange sounds. I could not figure out the cause of it but noted that my k2 meter was going off as well.

The doctor’s office/bank room was highly interesting! The Ovilus said “fire ceiling”, to which there had been an incident in the room many years prior. But the astonishing thing was the number of medical terms that came across and there seemed to be intelligent responses to our questions. For example, when Dan asked for the name of the doctor, it said “Adam”. When I inquired about them being robbed a couple of times in the past, the response was “poor within”. When Jim brought out the spirit box, I was very surprised to hear the name Vicki. Now the question is which Vicki?

We checked out the schoolhouse and church, but all seemed quiet. Apparently, kids don’t want to be in class on a Saturday and church folk may be only a Sunday thing?

The children’s room upstairs had several K2 meter hits around the dolls. Jason expressed seeing a head peeking around the corner of the doorway that led to the attic. The Ovilus said the name “Jack”.

After Dan and Jason left the room, Jim and I heard the closet door in the room making strange rattling noises several times.

Jim and I continued the second-floor investigation after Dan and Jason had left for the night. We had a couple of K2 hits in the Master bedroom, but more in Dorothy’s room. An odd thing happened while we were there, we noticed it suddenly got much darker in the corner. Our video camera didn’t pick up any changes, but a click clearly heard on our camera indicates that something in there was turned off.

For the most part, it was a quiet night. However, I did encounter some fun surprises on our videos. There were some weird squeaky noises, almost like an instrument being played. I found out that one of the former inhabitants, PD, played the clarinet. Was he perchance performing for us that night? I also heard the voice of a child very loudly on the video. Both of those were captured on our camera that was set up next to the front door shooting up the staircase. Cheney Mansion is a magnificent place, and it was a pleasure meeting Julia and another Vicki. I hope to make a return visit someday to this quaint paranormal village in the making.
