Story Inn, Story, Indiana July 2011
Trish and I arrived in Story around 6 PM. We were beginning to think we had made a wrong turn after traveling about ten miles on a narrow, hilly, winding road (135). It seemed like we had been on the road for 30 miles but lo and behold about the time we were going to give up we arrived! It is like a scene from long ago entering Story, originally established in 1851. The entire town is basically the old General Store which is now a Bed and Breakfast, Restaurant, and Bar. It is spectacular!
The weather was extremely hot, being over 90 degrees and humid. The evening and night were clear. We booked the Blue Lady Room, supposedly the most haunted room at the Inn. Over the years there have been many sightings of the Blue Lady in this particular room, and the journal kept in the room confirms this with many a guest reporting experiences. Trish and I first investigated the Old Barn at the back of the property and did indeed get a couple EVPS including something like Nish (or Nis) Kush? The closest thing I could ascertain to the meaning is that it is Albanian, meaning either "who left", or "who us?" Prior to this EVP I had knocked and asked for a response. (EVP at bottom of this page)
During the night we had some interesting things happen while in the Blue Lady room. Trish inexplicably had a fifteen minute period where her feet were aching while lying in bed. Around 2 am she felt like she was being shaken, like someone was trying to wake her up, but she was in that place where you are so tired that you're not sure if you are imagining it, or dreaming or whatever. She stated that she also had two incidences during the night where she felt her neck was touched. Despite all this, Trish was clearly agitated in the morning that nothing had happened in the night! Similarly I stated in the morning that I had no experiences either, but on further reflection I recalled a dream where I saw a misty blue figure eventually taking the shape of a black shadow which walked across the room. In retrospect maybe there was some paranormal activity that night or maybe just overactive imaginations. Trish and I however are not prone to such things typically so we will leave it at that.
Interestingly a very similar experience was noted in a journal entry which Trish read. The guest had written that nothing paranormal had occurred even as she wrote about events similar to what CAPS had experienced. We laughed at the journal entry for stating that nothing occurred as the individual was listing all the activity, and then we do the exact same thing! There were other possible light EVPs captured that night and a quick hit on the EMF meter as if someone walked past it quickly! It is a remarkable place that I would recommend to anyone, looking for paranormal activity or just looking for a great place to visit.
Oh yes there was one other thing. I am wondering if the Blue Lady or whatever spirit may be there has something against being on camera. My video recorder ate three tapes while I was trying to get it started. Of course having a vintage Sony Camcorder, I figured that its time had come. Surprisingly it has been working just fine ever since that evening; very odd I must say.

Story Inn, Story, Indiana July 2013
Investigators: Dave, Trish, Zach, Vicki D, Jamie, Vicki N, Jean and Mary
Weather conditions: Mild but humid, with a beautiful full moon and gorgeous starry night!
Once upon a time, the CAPS team ventured forth to a small hamlet called Story. Located in the “middle of nowhere” is quite an accurate depiction for this quaint tiny village founded by Dr. George Story in 1851. At one time it was considered the largest settlement in the area, however, you do not want to blink an eye, or you may miss what is left of this wondrous morsel of utopia.
The remaining buildings that have stood the test of time are few, such as a handful of cottages and the old general store that has been converted into the establishment, most aptly named, Story Inn. It contains a four room bed and breakfast on the second floor, a restaurant on the main level and a tavern in the basement. I have no doubt that a bountiful amount of tales could be told within those walls but one cannot preclude what lies on the outside. As you stroll through the beautiful garden, you view the stoic old barn and a solitary gravestone. It is all encircled by a wooded area; as Dave and Zach pointed out, a perfect scenario for Bigfoot!
The story goes that there are only 3 residents and a ghost, not counting the chickens. The ghost in question has been seen wandering the halls of this historic location for decades. Guests have described her as a kindly woman dressed in white Victorian clothing, seen moving through the upstairs bedrooms, but mainly in the location they now call the Blue Lady Room. I’m not exactly sure why they decided to call her the Blue Lady.
Dave, Trish, Zach and I arrived late Monday afternoon. Jamie, Vicki N, Jean and Mary arrived about an hour later. As a group of eight, we had booked the entire location for two nights. Trish and I opted for the Blue Lady room, Dave and Zach chose the Morrison-Kelly room, Jamie and her mom Vicki had the Lieber room, and Jean stayed with Mary in the Hedrick room.
As we gathered in the Blue Lady room that first night, some of the group decided to step out onto the balcony. Between the heat of the outdoors and the coolness of the air conditioner, a thick condensation formed on the vanity mirror revealing the word “DIE”. What a great way to begin our investigation I thought. Whoever did it…well done!
As darkness fell, we walked out through the gardens towards the barn to begin our investigation. This was the area where Dave and Trish had garnered the “Nish Kush” EVP from their previous visit. Unfortunately a large fan was left running, so we were unable to collect any clear recordings.
As we took turns strolling down the lane to look at an aged stable and an abandoned looking wooden building, my eyes feasted upon a remarkable view…the full moon, in all its shining glory and in the distance a layer of fog hovering just above the ground. As an added bonus, my cell phone did not have reception. This had all the makings of a horror film…and I loved it!
During our stay, I can honestly say that there was never a dull moment. Plentiful personal experiences can be recounted. One that we witnessed on numerous occasions, were these mysterious flashes of light, like those of a camera flash which seemed to occur randomly throughout the building.
Zach had an unnerving incident while alone in the Morrison Kelly room. He heard what he could only describe as someone breathing. I went in there a short time later to do an EVP session. During that time Vicki N. and Trish saw something white going into the Blue lady room. They thought for sure it was me, until they realized I was on the other side of the Inn and was wearing black.
On Monday, the door in the Lieber Room (between the bedroom and its private sitting room) closed on its own accord. That room seemed to be the most active room that night as Jamie and Vicki also heard a multitude of sounds like someone moving around in their adjoining sitting room. Although we didn’t have a video running in that location, the recorder captured many of those sounds.
As the bewitching hour of 3:00 am approached that first night, Trish and I sat chatting in a pair of chairs that decorates the Blue Lady room. We saw the blue lamp light flicker and heard a noise. Trish thought it sounded like a growl and I assured her it wasn’t my stomach. Around 4:30 am we heard the loudest noise that seemed to come from outside our window. It was a rather loud bang followed by the sound of rolling. When I listened back to it on video; it reminded me of a bowling ball rolling down the alley?
Throughout our investigation, our K2 meters went crazy several times. Sometimes randomly, but other moments it seemed in response to our questions. One of the most fascinating times was the second night. One of the meters were sitting on the table in the sitting area, it was green until Dave arrived having just left the notoriously haunted “Blue Lady room”. It suddenly spiked to red.
Next thing I saw was the door to the Blue Lady Room open on its own accord! Zach was in the room, but well away from the door. As he stepped out, the meter again spiked to red. It seemed to me as if something had been following Dave, went back into the room, and then followed Zach out! Oddly enough, that door was found opened previously that evening, yet that was something that had not occurred at all the first night.
There were several times when I walked into the Blue Lady room and felt so chilled. When looking at the air condition’s temperature setting, it had been turned down to 65, which we set to 68. I’m sure I was turning blue from being so cold. Oh, could that be why it’s called the Blue lady room?
As checkout time came to pass, I felt a bittersweet mixture of emotions; saddened by leaving such a place of serenity, but excited at the prospect of going home and relating all that had transpired on our trip to my family. Going through the evidence was not a chore; it was an opportunity to relive the time spent there.
A big thank you goes out to Jamie, Vicki, Jean and Mary for all their help investigating and sharing the laugher too! Story Inn and all that remains of the town are certainly a magical surreal place to experience! A story that is indeed timeless!
